The Mangrove Environmental
Protection Group is a grassroots organization made up of people from all
walks of life. Its membership is mostly Mexican but people from
other parts of the world also attend the meetings.
As a group we share the common goals of protecting the mangroves and other natural resources, and
promoting awareness, especially among the
youth. Another objective is to assure that the existing
environmental laws are respected, based on the principles of the LGEEPA
which guarantees the rights of all individuals to live in an environment
suitable for development, health and wellbeing. The current
president of the group is Juan Garcia, a local businessman who is also
active in surf competitions. Recently the group has been doing a lot of work
in the nearby community of Singayta, promoting tourism in this area as a way to
bring money into the community without destroying the environment.
Global Greengrants provided some of the funding for this project. Click
here for a full report. When
you are in San Blas, be sure to visit Singayta and visit our website, Ecotourism
in Singayta, Mexico for more information.
